Centennial Events: Generating Excitement
Join Boys & Girls Clubs of America in commemorating its Centennial. And what better way to start the celebration than to hear from the youth of America! Thousands of teens share their hopes, concerns and dreams in BGCA’s Youth Report to America. In May, BGCA hosted a reunion of several famous alumni during the 100th Annual National Conference in Boston.
Youth Report to America – The Centennial Celebration launched with a report from the nation’s youth, based on an extensive survey conducted in 2005, defining what hope and opportunity means to today’s kids now and for the future. National Boys & Girls Club Week – Clubs throughout the country hosted events April 2 - 8 within their local communities to highlight the programs, activities and staff members that make their local Club The Positive Place for Kids!
Major League Baseball – Once again, MLB hit a grand slam for BGCA, as the Centennial edition of the 10-year MLB ad campaign is seen during every nationally televised game, all season long. These ads debuted on Opening Night, April 2, and Opening Day, April 3 (coinciding with National Boys & Girls Club Week.)
Alumni Reunion – This prestigious reunion on May 4, 2006, united celebrity alumni with select alumni from all walks of life. Held during BGCA’s 100th Annual National Conference in Boston, where the organization was founded in 1906, this all-star red carpet entertainment event honored the achievements of Club kids, past and present. Inductees into BGCA’s Alumni Hall of Fame include 70s pop sensations Kool and the Gang and former CNN anchor Bernard Shaw, among others. Conference speakers include former Secretary of State Colin Powell and U.S. Army General Wesley Clark.
Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids - Celebrated the third Saturday of September, this year's Day for Kids event was held Sept. 16 with more than 1900 Boys & Girls Clubs participating throughout the nation and on U.S. military bases overseas. By far, this was the biggest event held to date with a million adults and children taking time to create lasting memories. [Learn more.]
