President’s Dinner
BGCA’s 2004 President’s Dinner was a stunning success as an impressive array of celebrities turned out to honor Governor Denzel Washington and media giant Viacom. Guests included Michael Jordan, Angela Bassett, Muhammad Ali and Donald Trump. Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman presented the highest honor BGCA can bestow on a volunteer, the Herbert Hoover Humanitarian Award, to Denzel. In his acceptance speech, Denzel spoke passionately about the influence the Club had on his life.

The Champion of Youth Award was presented to Sumner Redstone, chairman and CEO of Viacom, a company that has demonstrated tremendous philanthropy to America’s youth. Divisions of Viacom such as Nickelodeon and Blockbuster (now an independent company) have given strong support to BGCA initiatives.

Triple Play Triple Play, a new initiative empowering young people to make informed decisions about their physical, emotional and social well-being, was launched in New York on April 28, endorsed in person by Surgeon General Richard H. Carmona (a Club alumnus) and NBA Rookie of the Year Lebron James. BGCA is teaming up with The Coca-Cola Company, Kraft Foods and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to create Triple Play, part of a five-year, $12 million commitment from Coca-Cola and Kraft.

The November issue of In Style, an influential lifestyle magazine, carries a full-page feature saluting Denzel Washington’s 12 years as Boys & Girls Clubs’ national spokesperson. The article is a wonderful summary, in Denzel’s own words, of the dramatic impact the Club experience has had on his life.

The Sept. 29 issue of USA Today introduced the new National Youth of the Year, TJ Rancour, from the BGCs of Bay County in Bay City, Mich. The piece includes a photo of 2003-04 NYOY Mieasha Hicks "passing the torch" to TJ.
