  An Idea That Works

The teen center found its greatest advocate in Laure Stern, who, along with her husband, Daniel – best known for his roles in the “Home Alone” and “City Slickers” movies – established the Malibu Foundation for Youth and Families. After investigating several options, she contacted the neighboring Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club and its veteran executive Allan Young, and was impressed by what she learned.

To raise start-up funding for the teen center, the Sterns sponsored a private dinner with their friends Mel and Robyn Gibson that was supported by several of their neighbors. Known as the Founders Club, the group includes Keely and Pierce Brosnan, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks, and Cher. A high-profile group in a world-famous town. But kids there are no different from other young people in their need for the kind of support “The Positive Place” provides.

“The infrastructure of Boys & Girls Clubs works in all communities,” says Ms. Stern, who serves on the board of the Santa Monica Club and is president of the unit board overseeing the Malibu Teen Center. “All kids are at risk when it comes to making healthy decisions, and Boys & Girls Club programs are tested, dependable and engaging.”
