Boys & Girls Clubs of America strongly believes that Good Character & Citizenship programming is a vital component of our members’ Club Experience. Our organizational goal is to enable youth to become successful and productive citizens of their communities and our nation. Service learning and community service opportunities represent practical applications of this important principle. Youth who volunteer are more likely to do well in school, graduate from high school and vote. Furthermore, they are more likely to develop a strong work ethic that will serve them well as they pursue higher education and rewarding careers.
Similarly, the Citi Foundation supports the economic progress of low-income people in locations where Citi operates. Using a “More than Philanthropy” approach, the Citi Foundation puts the strength of Citi’s business resources and personnel to work to enhance their philanthropic investments and help improve communities. Support for BGCA’s programming is a key component of how the Citi Foundation is working to galvanize volunteerism beyond Citi and into communities.
The Million Members, Million Hours of Service (MMMHS) Campaign is designed to raise awareness of service learning and community service, provide Club members with resources to implement a service learning or community service project, and engage 1 million Boys & Girls Club members to provide 1 million hours of community service (compounded annually) over the next five years. Ultimately, our goal is to engage 1 million members in at least 1 million hours of service in a single year.
With a grant from the Citi Foundation and through Citi employees volunteering their time and expertise, BGCA is establishing the program’s infrastructure. It will include investments in service learning and community service resources, MMMHS platform technology upgrades, and resources to establish internal and external awareness for the Campaign.
With the support of Citi Foundation, our plan is to achieve the following goals by December 2015: increase the number of Club members engaged in community service and service learning by 14 percent to 400,000; and expand the number of Clubs that offer community service and service learning programming by 10 percent to 2,112. Working in partnership with Citi Foundation, BGCA will build Boys & Girls Clubs’ capacity to sustain and expand this effort in future years.
