Staples
Since
2003, BGCA’s Torch Club program has been sponsored by a grant from Staples
Foundation for Learning. During that time, Staples has committed $5.5 million
dollars to the program. Torch Clubs are chartered small-group
leadership and service clubs for boys and girls. The program is a powerful
vehicle through which Club staff can help meet the special needs of younger
adolescents at a critical stage in their development. Torch Club members learn
to work together to plan and implement activities in four areas: service to Club
and community, education, health and fitness, and social recreation.
Staples helps to fund its support of BGCA with in-store promotions. Staples
locations nationwide, through the Supplies for School Kids program, have invited
customers to donate money at checkout to provide much-needed items, including
notebooks, pencils, crayons, rulers and folders, directly to Boys & Girls Club
members in their community. Staples also contributes proceeds from the sale of
their Easy Button product to BGCA. A quirky and fun product for the office or
home desktop, the Staples Easy Button™ was developed to look exactly like the
ones featured in the popular Staples commercials. When the button is pressed, it
says the Staples tagline, “that was easy.”
In line with Torch Clubs’ message of involvement in the community, Staples is
encouraging Clubs to recycle through the Recycle for Education program. Clubs
can earn funding by sending used ink and toner cartridges to Staples for
recycling. For more information about Recycle for Education, visit Staples
Recycle for Education on the Web.
