Building Character in Kids
One of the cornerstones of Boys & Girls Clubs is a dedication to helping young people develop a moral compass. Clubs help kids identify important values and social responsibilities, such as freedom, compassion, democracy and diversity. In other words, qualities that will enable young people to develop strong character.
Of course, kids do not go to a Boys & Girls Club to have their character built. They go for the engaging programs, caring staff members and opportunity to socialize with peers. Along the way, though, an amazing thing happens. As kids play, learn and grow in a structured Boys & Girls Club environment, they also absorb valuable lessons about the importance of helping others and of being responsible citizens. The magic of Boys & Girls Clubs is that this transformation takes place in an atmosphere of fun, support and mutual respect.
This issue of The Positive Place features stories about Club members who demonstrate the values they learned at their
Boys & Girls Club. You’ll read about Club kids’ efforts to help victims of the tsunami disaster, be inspired by an especially touching story about one child’s story of individual success, and meet two former Club members who continue to support our mission and give back to the place that gave them a good start in life. Finally, you’ll learn about our strategy to bring the Boys & Girls Club experience to even more youth in need through our Latino Outreach Initiative.
Thank you for your continued support of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and our efforts to provide the nation’s youth with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in life.
