Photography Sparks Young Imaginations

A child swinging up into a sunny sky. Colorful fish swimming across a pond. Two little girls in summer dresses holding hands.

These are all snapshots taken by young people who attend Boys & Girls Clubs. Each image conveys a distinct perspective, the world through a child’s eyes.

“When you place a camera in a child’s hand, you’ll be amazed at what develops,” says Jennifer Young, director of arts programs at Boys & Girls Clubs of America. “A photograph says as much about the photographer as it does about the subject in the photo.”

Each of the aforementioned photographs is a winner in BGCA’s 2007 ImageMakers National Photography Contest. The contest is part of a year-round program that provides Club members with the opportunity to express themselves, build confidence and learn fun new skills. ImageMakers helps young people learn and practice black-and-white, color, digital and alternative process photography.

Club members’ photographs selected at the contest’s national level are exhibited at the BGCA National Conference as well as other events and venues. Winners in the portfolio category also receive college scholarships.

Thanks to Circuit City Foundation, millions of young imaginations
are sparked every year through ImageMakers.
