Finding Inspiration in Today’s Youth

In difficult economic times, we all look for inspiration to help us pull through. At Boys & Girls Clubs, we see young people overcoming tremendous challenges, such as poverty, violence and the temptation to drop out of school. Each day we witness kids turning their lives around – and becoming strong leaders who make a difference in others’ lives. Such sights fill us with hope.

We also find great inspiration in our National Youth of the Year. Each year, Boys & Girls Clubs of America bestows its highest honor on an extraordinary Club member for service to Club and community, academic performance and contributions to family life.

The five regional Youth of the Year finalists featured in this issue of The Positive Place remind us that it’s important to grow up with mentors and to foster positive relationships with caring adults. Through dedicated communities, family support and guidance from youth development professionals – such as Boys & Girls Club staff – young people have a chance to become strong leaders and achieve success.

To celebrate this national recognition, the finalists spent a week in Washington, D.C., attending many exciting events, including a Congressional Breakfast featuring leaders from both sides of the aisle. The highlight? They visited President Bush at the Oval Office in the White House, where they each received a President’s Volunteer Service Award for selfless contributions to their communities.

The young people named Youth of the Year are living proof that Boys & Girls Clubs work. Indeed, there is no surer testimony that Clubs live up to their reputation as “The Positive Place for Kids.” But their success would not be possible without compassionate people like you. Because of your support, we are able to help shape tomorrow’s leaders.
