Clubs Keeps Kids Safe After School

Dear Friends,

Do you remember the old ad campaign promoting responsible parenting that asked the question, “It’s 10 p.m., do you know where your children are?” Although the question is still a good one, the reality is that our children are at much greater risk in the after-school hours than they are in the late evening. You might be surprised to find out that the majority of all youth crimes occur between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Research also indicates that children are much more likely to experiment with premature sexual activity, drugs and alcohol, and a host of other inappropriate behaviors during this time period.

What makes this time of day such a great risk, and why is it so different today than it was for past generations of American children? The answer is fairly simple. For many of our children, there is no adult at home to supervise their activities after school. Far too many young people are greeted after school each day by a street corner or an empty house, where they are left to fend for themselves. Common sense tells us this is a recipe for disaster.

With school back in full swing, our Boys & Girls Clubs are filled with children learning a skill on the computer, making new friends, getting help with their homework and doing what kids like to do most – having fun. In this issue of The Positive Place, we highlight a few of these Clubs and the work they are doing with America’s children.

As a donor to Boys & Girls Clubs of America, you are on the front lines with us, providing positive places for children. By supporting our after-school programs, you help prepare the next generation of leaders. On behalf of our kids, thank you for all you do.
