Celebrating Our Judgement Free Generation® Scholarship Winner: Erin D.

The Judgement Free Generation® Scholarship program, a collaboration between Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Planet Fitness, awards $5,000 to college-bound high-school seniors who promote kindness within their local communities. Collectively known as the JFG Squad, our winners were selected based on how they embody kindness, inclusion, and Judgement Free™ values.

Q&AErin D.Erin D.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Erin D.: I am a first year at University of New England. I am majoring in occupational therapy and in my free time I enjoy hanging out with friends, reading, and going to the beach! I have a passion for working with kids and helping others.

What inspired you to apply for the Judgement Free Generation® Scholarship?

ED: Growing up the Boys & Girls Club was always a second home. When I went to the Club, I always knew there would be someone there that made me feel like I belonged. As I got older, I realized it wasn’t the Club that was so special, it was the people who surrounded me. It became a goal of mine to make others feel a sense of belonging when they came to the Club like others did for me.

How has your experience at the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem prepared you for college?

ED: The most important thing the Club gave me to prepare me for college was a support system. Throughout every part of my college journey, I had people by my side cheering me on and supporting me. Not only did they help me get where I am now but they are always there for me when I go back and I know they will always be there for me in the future. The staff at the club allowed me to feel confident taking this next step in my life and encouraged me to follow my dreams.

What does winning the Judgement Free Generation® Scholarship mean to you?

ED: Receiving the Judgement Free Generation® Scholarship was a huge honor. To me this scholarship was not just financial support but also a commitment to promoting a culture of inclusivity, acceptance, and kindness.

What school do you attend, and how has this scholarship helped you achieve your goals and supported you this semester?

ED: I am a freshman at the University of New England. When deciding what college to attend, finances played a big role. The JFG Scholarship allowed me to pick a school I love, knowing it would be more affordable. I quickly fell in love with the campus and environment here at UNE. I have also been fortunate enough to have opportunities like being a part of the Honors College here at UNE.

Can you describe a moment when you felt you made a positive impact in your community?

ED: At my local Boys & Girls Club I strived to keep our club environment kind and welcoming. Whether that was as Keystone president or as a staff member. I wanted to keep the Club a safe place for others to go. I hoped others would find a love for the BGC like I had and want to continue to attend and give back.

How have you continued promoting the values of the Judgement Free Generation® on campus?

ED: I strive to be an active member in my new community. I am a part of clubs on campus and volunteer on and off campus. One club I am a part of is the Student Philanthropy Association which strives to promote kindness through volunteering in our community.

What message would you like to share with other teens about the importance of kindness, anti-bullying, and creating environments where people feel like they belong?

ED: I think it is important to remember that everyone is living life for the first time, take it easy on yourself and others! Do what makes you happy and encourage others to do the same.
