An Update From Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui
In early August, wildfires broke out on the island of Maui, destroying much of the town of Lahaina. Like so many on the island, several members of our Boys & Girls Club family were displaced, and the state of the Lahaina Clubhouse (pictured above) remained uncertain for nearly a week.
But at the heart of our mission at Boys & Girls Clubs is doing whatever it takes for youth.
That’s why supporters from across the country came together and raised funds to help Club kids, families and the entire Maui community as they began a long rebuilding process.
In the immediate aftermath, “whatever it takes” meant providing services to youth at the largest shelter in Central Maui, collecting and distributing essential supplies to families in need and carefully reopening Clubs on the island to serve as safe places for the community.
And today, that support continues to play a major role in community recovery. Here’s how:
- Reopening the Central, Haiku, Kahekili, Paukukalo and Makawao Club doors to provide after school support Monday through Friday and during school breaks.
- Providing mobile youth development services to displaced families across Maui, including through a satellite Club location operating out of the Hyatt Regency in Kaanapali, and additional hours on school breaks and holidays.
- Distributing more than 500 backpacks full of school supplies, hygiene kits and healthy snacks to youth and teens.
- Supporting more than 400 children and families through financial assistance, with no obligation of repayment, ensuring that families can use these funds as needed.
- Helping more than 300 Maui youth who are involved in team sports or group activities replace lost items and acquire the necessary resources to participate in activities that support their physical, mental and social-emotional well-being.
“The devastating 2023 Maui wildfire disaster has left a profound impact on the community of Lahaina, particularly its youth and families… While we continue to grieve and provide hope for those who need us, we strive to serve every child and teen in our community.” – Kelly Pearson, CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui
The world is complicated, but when the unpredictable happens, Boys & Girls Clubs ensure kids — in Maui and across the country — have the support and resources they need to build (and re-build) great futures.
