Why is Group Work Important for Students? 5 Skills Children Develop
Group work is a part of every student’s educational journey. Yet, many students often say, “I hate group projects!” It’s a feeling almost everyone has had at some point, but understanding the benefits of group work can change this mindset.
Group work is more than just a school requirement; it’s a valuable experience that helps students develop essential life skills. Let’s explore five reasons why it’s important for students to embrace group work.
It Fosters Teamwork
Group work is all about teamwork and collaboration. When students work together, they learn how to divide tasks, share responsibilities and support each other. This collaboration mirrors real-life situations where working with others is essential. At Boys & Girls Clubs, youth learn to understand the power of working together through academic success programming that promotes teamwork through various group activities.
For instance, through the Project Learn program sponsored by our partners at Panda Express, students engage in high-yield learning activities that reinforce academic enrichment and school engagement. These activities include leisure reading, writing, discussions with knowledgeable adults, helping others, homework help, tutoring, and cognitive skill games. Project Learn emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collaboration, creating opportunities for youth to work together and support each other’s learning.
The Motivation & Incentives pillar of Project Learn celebrates youth for their effort and progress, giving them opportunities to recognize one another. By fostering both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, the program helps students appreciate the value of teamwork and the collective effort required to achieve common goals.
“When students understand that their success is interconnected with the success of their peers, they develop a deeper appreciation for collaboration. Project Learn’s group projects and the Motivation & Incentives pillar ensure that kids not only achieve academic success but also build essential teamwork skills that are crucial for their future careers,” shared Tina Hsing, Panda Cares Director.
It Improves Communication Skills
Group projects help students express their ideas clearly and listen to others. When working as part of a team, kids learn to give and receive constructive feedback, vital for personal and academic growth. At Clubs, kids access programs that focus on developing strong communication skills, enabling them to articulate their thoughts and collaborate effectively.
We partner with organizations that share our commitment to youth development. Carter’s, a national partner, supports academic success and communication skills development. Over the next three years, Carter’s will help us advance early childhood education resources, elementary-age literacy support and provide 50,000 volunteer hours to empower their employees to get involved locally.
“At Carter’s, we are grateful to be a part of the journey of childhood, and honored to partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of America,”said Jill Wilson, Carter’s Senior Vice President, Human Resources & Talent Management. “Starting group work early helps kids interact confidently with peers and adults. Our partnership helps expand their reach and support young children and their parents.”
It Develops Conflict Resolution Techniques
Anyone who has been a part of group work knows that group projects aren’t always smooth sailing. Conflicts can arise, and learning to navigate and resolve these issues is an important skill. Through group work, students learn to manage disagreements, find compromises and work towards a common goal. Boys & Girls Clubs teach conflict resolution through various programs, equipping youth with the tools they need to handle disputes calmly and effectively.
Here are tips for parents, caregivers and teachers to help children develop conflict-resolution skills:
- Encourage Open Communication: Teach your child to express their feelings and listen to others.
- Model Positive Behavior: Demonstrate how to handle conflicts calmly and respectfully.
- Provide Problem-Solving Strategies: Help your child brainstorm solutions to conflicts they face.
- Practice Empathy: Encourage your child to consider others’ perspectives and feelings.
- Reinforce Positive Interactions: Praise your child when they successfully resolve conflicts.
It Builds Leadership and Responsibility
Group work provides opportunities for students to take on leadership roles. Whether they are leading a project or managing specific tasks, students learn to take responsibility and guide their peers. At Boys & Girls Clubs, we offer character and leadership programming and volunteer opportunities that help youth build leadership skills and a sense of responsibility.
For example, our Power Hour program allows kids to work on their homework in mentor and group settings. This not only helps them with their academic tasks but also gives them the opportunity to assist younger Club members, fostering leadership and role modeling. Through Power Hour, youth learn to manage their time, offer guidance, and become positive influences in their community.
Additionally, local Club volunteer opportunities, like neighborhood clean-ups or helping care for a community garden, allow youth to take on leadership roles and give back to their communities. These experiences foster a sense of responsibility and community-mindedness, preparing them to be conscientious and proactive leaders in the future.
It Enhances Creativity
Working in a group brings an array of different ideas, perspectives and work styles from each member of the group project. This diversity helps to increase creativity as students work together to find innovative solutions. Listening to others’ ideas also helps them to be more creative down the road as they learn new information or tactics from their peers.
Boys & Girls Clubs partner with organizations that share our commitment to nurturing creativity in youth. Chips Ahoy! knows that arts and creativity can help teens find their happy place. To support this, they’ve teamed up with us to launch the Follow Your Art campaign. With a generous three-year, $1 million donation, Chips Ahoy! is funding art programs nationwide, ensuring more teens have the tools, resources, and inspiration to follow their art wherever it takes them.
“Creativity is essential to helping today’s youth reach their full potential. Whether it’s dreaming up a future career or envisioning a new solution to an old problem, when kids have access to the tools, resources and inspiration found at Boys & Girls Clubs, the sky is the limit.” — Natalie Gadbois, Senior Brand Manager, Chips Ahoy!
Group work can also be an outlet to share creative projects with others in a safe way. As teams build trust through working towards a common goal, members of the group feel more comfortable and confident showcasing their unique talents without fear of judgment.
