2019-20 Midwest Youth of the Year
Club/Organization: U.S. Army Garrison Fort Knox CYS Services
College/University: University of Florida
Career Goal: Journalism
“I want to show everyone that you can come from rough beginnings and still be an honor student and president of multiple clubs. You can come from being homeless and living in a car to becoming an individual with purpose, passion and ambition.”
Every young person, like Lauro, deserves a safe, positive environment in which to learn and grow.
Lauro was an anxious 11-year-old who spoke only Spanish when he joined the Youth Center. With the help of Youth Center staff, he learned not only to speak English but to make meaningful changes in his life. He organized community service projects like food and clothing drives. He served as president of Student Ambassadors and as a member of the Kentucky United Nations Assembly.
Lauro has a vision to lower the death rate among young people by advocating for self-defense and situational-awareness classes to be taught in schools and youth centers nationwide. Lauro is a freshman at University of Florida and plans to pursue a career in journalism.
