“If we are not preparing our youth to become successful leaders, then we are not preparing the world for the next group of leaders.”
Every young person, like Marcus, deserves a safe, positive environment in which to learn and grow.
“I learned to like and love myself at the John Will Anderson Boys & Girls Club,” says Marcus. Before coming to the Club, Marcus was guarded and quiet, not wanting to share his feelings of self-doubt or depression with anyone. The Club gave him a place he could express himself, where staff worked diligently to earn his trust. Ever since, Marcus realizes the energy and self-confidence he can tap into at the Club.
He’s used that energy to become an active participant and leader at the Club and beyond – joining STEM and Keystone leadership programs, working as a Junior Staff member, and serving on his school’s student government.
Knowing how it impacted him, Marcus is a champion of youth mentoring. After finishing college, he intends to invest his education and experience back into the youth of his community. “From setting goals, personal finances, improving social skills and building positive relationships – these are some of the topics I believe will benefit youth,” he says. “It’s critical we invest in our youth now, so that they can be great leaders tomorrow.”
