What kind of difference do you hope to make while being a part of BGCA’s National Youth Advisory Council?
I have been president of the Keystone Club at my military-connected Club for the past three years, along with being an ambassador for the Think, Learn, Create Change program. This has given me the opportunity to connect with my community, and experience firsthand what works within my military-connected Club and my community. My main mission is to bridge the gap between military-connected Clubs and traditional Clubs, and to show that we have so much in common rather than differences. I think that it’s very important that Boys & Girls Clubs of America continues to bring these programs to military-connected Clubs and Clubs that serve Native young people, because they provide them with an opportunity to feel seen, heard and just as important as my military-connected Club makes me feel.
What do you think Club and BGCA staff could do to better understand the needs and experiences of teens today?
Something I think Club staff and BGCA should know is that teens are very eager to make a difference and take action. We have ideas, passions and a desire to create positive change, and we just need the right support to turn those ideas into reality. By providing accessible resources, opportunities, encouragement and mentorship, staff can empower teens to lead with confidence. When young people feel supported and trusted, they are capable of making a meaningful impact in their schools, communities and Clubs.
What do you see as your biggest strength?
I see my biggest strengths as empathy and adaptability. I am a very empathetic person who takes the time to understand how others are feeling and where they’re coming from in different situations. Because of that, I can adapt my leadership style to meet the needs of the people around me. As a leader, I strive to support and guide others in a way that helps them grow and become better leaders themselves.
